We have mentored a foster child through many “homes” and placements, and she has spent many holidays with us. This year, she’s bonding (we hope) with a new family.

There’s a common perception that with cancer in the house, the mood is all death and dying, gloom and doom. But there can be laughter and humor, too.

Rather than a one-way transfer of my beliefs to them, my kids, now 19 and 16, are teaching me to see the world—and my in-laws—with new eyes.

It’s been more than four months since my sister took her own life, and I still haven’t spoken with my 12-year-old daughter about it.
