’19 Kids and Counting’ Cancellation Leads to $24 Million Charge for Discovery Communications

Discovery Communications must pay $24 million as a result of cancelling the hit show “19 Kids and Counting.”
The company owns TLC, the channel on which the reality show following the Duggar family was broadcast.
The company was charged the amount “primarily due to content impairment charges” due to canceling the show, Chief Financial Officer Andrew Warren said in a post-earnings conference call on Wednesday, reported The Hollywood Reporter.
TLC decided to cancel the program, which was the highest-rated show on the network, after it was revealed Josh Duggar molested multiple girls when he was younger.
The oldest Duggar child, Josh was heavily featured on the show with his own family, his wife and three children.
Discovery also took impairment charges in the fourth quarter of 2014 for canceling Here Comes Honey Boo, another show on TLC, and Sons of Guns, on the Discovery Channel.
