Oklahoma photographer defies labels to put brilliance, beauty on display

By Yvette Walker Staff Writer ywalker@oklahoman.comThirty years ago, Valerie Vaughn was a little girl growing up in Midwest City. Brown-skinned and introverted, she was subjected to taunts from the other kids.
“Pretty … for a big girl.”
Today, she's using her camera and her connections to help other girls redefine their own standards of beauty.
On Saturday, 200 men, women and children came to downtown Oklahoma City to witness the launch of Vaughn's “unlabeled: i define me,” a multimedia project that brings together the powers of photography, video and spoken-word poetry.

The project will live on at www.projectunlabeled.com, but on Saturday, the crowds gathered to see the photo exhibit and to experience a short video, featuring a spoken-word performance by poet and Internet sensation Telesa Hines, who wrote the piece especially for the project.

BY SCOTT WRIGHTMIDWEST CITY — Just as they started to feel like they were going to blow out their crosstown rivals, Midwest City players instead found themselves in a dogfight to the final seconds.
Kobe Love, who had hardly been able to practice all week because of an illness, sacked Carl Albert quarterback Braxton Dickerson on the final play of the game to seal Midwest City's 28-21 win over the Titans on Friday night at Rose Field.
