Although groundbreaking technology is pushing the world forward by making life easier, it is also pushing people out of their jobs–or is it? A new Forrester study suggests that the boom of technology may transform our jobs, but it won’t replace them completely.
While these technologies are both real and important, and some jobs will disappear because of them, the future of jobs overall isn’t nearly as gloomy as many prognosticators believe,” the report states. “In reality, automation will spur the growth of many new jobs—including some entirely new job categories.”–(source: Wired).
Obviously, the dawn of technology has obliterated jobs, and entire industries, completely (Blockbuster, here’s looking at you). However, as we previously reported, automation technology and its advancements can also be the key to working more efficiently and cost effectively, particularly for the entrepreneur who has limited time, budget, and manpower. As the study states, technology in this case isn’t job replacement, but rather job transformation–freeing up our time by creating more resources in order to get the job done. Still not convinced? Automating what used to be manual processes–like marketing–only frees up your time to focus on your bottom line. For example, marketing automation services help you quickly recognize successful keywords to create marketing messages. It allows you to quickly post to social media and send out e-mails alerting consumers of new products and services, sales, events, to name a few. Without the automation, you would lose a lot of time doing the marketing yourself. Or you would forego it all together and lose out on a large number of new clients. That means they can find and assess figures, keywords, and other data. They can calculate numbers –even large ones – quickly and precisely. In a world of big data, their math skills are invaluable. But they can’t really translate their findings, nor can they come up with ways to use the numbers to improve businesses. That’s where people have to come in.
Robots Need People
A computer, robot, or artificial intelligence unit is only as good as the person who created and programmed it. That’s a job (or more like a few jobs) right there. And these machines need adjustments, updates, and fixes every now and then. Those represent more human jobs. Finally, many of today’s robots need someone to turn them on and get them moving. For example, that forklift system for parking cars at the airport requires a human to maintain it, says Gownder in Wired. The world still needs humans to make the machines work.
No one knows what the future will bring. For now, man has an edge on robots because he has emotions and can sympathize, communicate, be humorous, and interact with other humans. Humans also have unmatched creativity that allows them to create art and come up with ideas that robots, so far, cannot replicate. Customers still want to talk to you when they need a product or service or have a concern or dilemma with which you can help. After all, how many times have you clicked 0 to speak with the operator after a computer answered a customer service line? In other words, you can rest easy. Humans will have work to do as long as other humans are their customers.
